Walsweer
Piemonte is een provincie in Italië waarin o.a.
Caesar Claudius was a member of the Mazzetti family -- an old Italian noble family of bankers.
His birthdate is not known, biut he was probably born about 1560 in or near Frinco, Italy, in the Piedmont region. He arrived in Bolsward, the Netherlands, around 1580, although the actual date of his immigration from Italy to the Netherlands is not known. The reason he left Italy also is not known.
Caesar is first mentioned in the records of Bolsward in 1586, where he leased space on Nyehofstraat (a street name that no longer exists). He had lots 1 t / m 3 in his possession there. On July 1, 1602 Cesar received his license for a Bank Loan, and a notation in 1603 in the proclomation book identifies him "Taeffelholder in Bolsward " -- i.e., he was a banker or had a pawn shop .
There is a stone relief dated 1600 is in Lommertsteeg (Pawnshop alley) in Bolsward, and it is said to be a portrayal of Caesar.
The gravestone for Ceasar and his wife in the church in Bolsward is located under the organ loft. The tombstone is embossed with the surname Macett. The tombstone refers to Caesar as a lord of Frinco and Saluggia (another small town in the Piedmont province of Italy).
The Mazzetti family name is notated differently in different countries and at different times. Other examples are Macet, Machet, de Machet, Macetti, Mazetti, Mazet, and Mazeth. The original version is probably Maccii.
The Mazzetti pedigree begins with four brothers: Giovanni, Domenico, Giovanni Ercole and Nicoletto. The family had its roots in Bologna. From there they moved to Savoy (France), and in 1442 the four brothers bought the castle in Frinco, which is in the present day province of Asti in the Piedmont region of Italy. At that time, however, the Prince of Savoy governed the region.
The Mazzetti family was one in a series of families that governed the commune of Frinco and other nearby regions in Asti. They were one of the "Casane Astigiane," Italian for "Houses of Asti," which were the major family banking houses of Asti in the middle ages. Their economic activities included currency exchange and lending.
Frinco was granted to the Pelletta family in about 1250, although little is known about them. In 1342 Antonio and Turchetto Turco took over Frinco from the Pelletta family. (The Turco family was also known as Turchi, Turci or Turco dei De Castello). Their accession to noble status can be traced to their increased wealth through banking, lending and property investment, starting in the 11th and 12th centuries. By 1270 they began to operate at an international level, receiving privileges in Flanders (in particular the towns of Valenciennes, Binche and Maubeuge), and in Savoy, and by lending to the Counts of Hainaut and Namur.
On August 1, 1442 Andreotta Turco, daughter of Antonio, sold her interest in Frinco and a palace in Asti to three Mazzetti brothers, Giovanni, Nicoletto and Domenico and their grandchildren, sons of the late fourth brother Paul, Andrew, and Antonietto Catalan.
In 1829 the dynasty died out with Paolo Mazzetti. Frinco was acquired by the Marquis Camerana, the brothers Giulio and Eugenio of Roero Settime. Frinco was no longer a feudal lordship, only private property, due to the abolition of all noble privileges following the French Revolution. The Cameranas sold their possessions on May 30, 1893 to the congregation of the Oblates of St. Joseph of Asti. The castle became the summer home for the students of the Gymnasium and Lyceum and for their novices.
In 1935 Frinco became part of the province of Asti. In the 1960s, the castle was bought by the a company, Morlini, which invested there in a poultry farm. That firm later failed, and in 1992 the family Pica Alfieri purchased it at an auction. In 2008, the castle was sold to the real estate company Daupher. However, Daupher declared bankruptcy in mid-2012. Gianfrano purchased the castle in 2014 with the aim to restore it.
The Mazzettis received the right in the 15th Century to mint coins, although reportedly they did not do so until the mid-1500's. The coat of arms pictured is from the New Hub Coin Book published in 1905 in New York and relates to the Mazzettis who secured minting rights. The copper coin of Frinco was known as a Chiavarino, issued by the Counts Ercole and Claudio Mazzetti (1581-1601). The word Chiavajo in Italian means the Keeper of the Keys, and the coin receives its name from the Papal type of the keys and tiara which appear on this issue.
The coin pictured is from 1660. A website description (poorly translated) states: FRINCO HERCULES and CLAUDIO Mazzetti (1581-1584) Counterfeiting of the Thaler 1660 type Netherlands. D / figure in armor above the emblem R / Lion rampant. Gamb. 634 Mi (suberata) 25.2 g. Gamberini, in his work on imitation and counterfeit currency in the world (Part IV), attributes this Tallero to a brand unknown Lombard or Piedmont.
According to a 1908 Numismatic book, a coin (known as a sesino) minted by the Mazzetti's between 1582 and 1604 bore the motto, "Help us, O Lord" (ADJVVA NOS DOMINE DEVS).
Caesar was a Liege Lord (i.e., a lord to who loyalty was owed by certain subjects) Salugien and Monteferrat (a district in the Piedmont region of Italy) and had a castle in Frinco, which was a small town in the middle of Piedmonte Like his ancestors he was a banker. Why he moved to Bolsward is uncertain.
Caesar is first mentioned as a taeffelhouder (banker) in Bolsward in 1586 in "de stedepachten" (rent register), which indicates he owned houses numbered 1-3 on Nyehofstraat. On March 16th, 1603 he and his wife Mayke bought the brewery located at 't Groot Sand (a street) for the amount of 1429 golden florins and 18 pennies.
At the same time, his nephew Ercole (Hercules) confiscated Caesar's properties in Italy, including his castle.
In or about 1610, records of the archives in Asti indicate that Caesar was declared a "heretic" because he had converted in the Netherlands to Calvinism.
Caesar died in 1622 and is buried under the organ -- the most important spot -- in the Martini Church in Bolsward.
In 1658 Caesar's only son tried to repossess the lost properties in Italy by lobbying at the court of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand III, in Vienna. However, at his return in Italy he was, reportedly, poisoned with a pasty.
Caesars four daughters -- Catalina, Jeroentje, Trijntje and Franske -- all married. Catalina married a son of the mayor, Douwe Sijmens Eysma. Trijntje married Major Frederik Bothes. Franske married Reverend Matthias C. Walsweer.
Jeroentje married first the brother of the famous Frysian poet Gysbert Japicx (Holckema), Evert Jaocbs. Her second marriage was to Ynthe Symens Ynthema.
The last Mazzetti (Machet) in the Netherlands lived in 1807 in Amsterdam when a J.J. Machet wrote a booklet entitled The French Perfumery.
The family Mazzetti also acquired a castle south of Frinco near Asti, known today as the Palazzo Mazzetti. The palace was built on land that included a massive fortified house belonging to the family Turkish. A record from 1442 reflects the purchase of assets and funds of the Turkish family. According to the latest assumptions, it is likely that before the building, there were small houses, gradually purchased by Mazzetti, and in the seventeenth century, began the unification of the buildings with the construction of the palace. In 1730 there was the realization of the gallery on the first floor. Development continued in 1751 with the construction of the facade, the atrium, the staircase and east gallery.
